But when Congress selected Gates to command the Northern Army it did not explicitly place him under Washington’s command. 28 Gates had served well as Washington’s adjutant general during the siege of Boston, but now Gates was technically independent from his old friend. As a result of the action of Congress, Gates now increasingly saw Washington as a rival rather than as his superior. Meanwhile, Arnold created his own potential discord by taking on Richard Varick and other close associates of Philip Schuyler in Albany.

As the Americans fell back they were joined by more units, both short-​term militia regiments and long-​term Continental regulars.
