But when Congress selected Gates to command the Northern Army it did not explicitly place him under Washington’s command. 28 Gates had served well as Washington’s adjutant general during the siege of Boston, but now Gates was technically independent from his old friend. As a result of the action of Congress, Gates now increasingly saw Washington as a rival rather than as his superior.
